Platforms such as YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music are considered the norm for listening to music. With this evolution of the Music Industry we see a multitude of different platforms, codecs, deliverables, and loudness standards that are part of our daily mixing and mastering workflows, but how do we go about mixing and mastering for all these new standards whilst maintaining full control over our work and the effects of the various codecs? Music is consumed very differently these days compared to ten years ago. Instead, let's agree that there are arguments for and against mastering your own material. Over the last few years, more and more plug-ins have emerged that promise great mastering capabilities making "self-mastering" easier than ever before while also providing tools that help us to deliver music to a range of modern-day loudness specs. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, this article isn't going to open that can of worms. it was a little studio, in a bedroom, and they still went after him. These days many Music Producers and Recording Artists "self-master" their music.

they went to court, he lost and had to pay Waves something like $7000, plus he was forced to buy the Diamond Bundle. i went from "no big deal" toĪnd speaking of Waves, fuck those guys too! i met a guy a few years ago, here in northern California, who was entrapped and sued by Waves. i started with a pretty good attitude and you all dredged up my latent hatred for corporate bullying. This conversation has made me reflect on all the things i hate about the iLok. i can just see it now: "Komplete 10, with SafeLok" or some bullshit.) (now i really hope NI doesn't start requiring them.

I guess i'll draw the line with iLok since i'm stuck with it, try and never go back to needing two dongles. That's one thing Apple did right after they took over - ditch the dongle. i completely forgot that Logic used to have one too. how come everything isn't dual-platform by now, anyway? it's 2012!Ĭome to think of it, it's only been a couple of years since i've stopped using Logic's dongle.

especially when iLok wants to charge you to back it up. i'd definitely rather not have all those licenses tied to one little dongle. i regularly use Sonnox, Eventide, Abbey Road and a few others that require iLok, so i'm kind of stuck. then about 6 months (or a year?) ago Slate Digital was doing a promotion for their VCC plugin with a new iLok 2 included for $150 so i upgraded then, as a free promotional thing. in all that time the iLok 1 always worked great. When i stopped using cracks about 6 or 7 years ago i found that a few of the plug-ins i'd come to rely on were iLok-only, so i just bit the bullet. Seriously, if you're on Windows and haven't given Ferric a try, it's worth one.

A lot of people don't like being tethered to a (falliable) copy protection device, don't like paying extra for something that will likely get cracked anyway, in a matter of time.
